Changes in excitation and inhibition are associated with the pathobiology of neurodevelopmental disorders of intellectual disability and autism and are widely described in Fragile X syndrome FXS. In the prefrontal cortex PFC , essential for cognitive processing, excitatory connectivity and plasticity are found altered in the FXS mouse model, however, little is known about the state of inhibition. We report changes at the molecular, and functional levels of inhibition at three prepubescence and six adolescence postnatal weeks. Functional changes were most prominent during early postnatal development, resulting in stronger inhibition, through increased synaptic inhibitory drive and amplitude, and reduction of inhibitory short-term synaptic depression. Noise analysis of prepubescent post-synaptic currents demonstrated an increased number of receptors opening during peak current in Fmr1-KO inhibitory synapses.
Aerobic fitness of prepubescent children

This study was designed to enhance understanding of the assessment and interpretation of the aerobic fitness of prepubertal children. Twenty-five per cent of the eligible children in each school were randomly selected from those who volunteered. The data reported here are those obtained from the boys Peak oxygen uptake peak VO2 was determined using a discontinuous, incremental protocol on a treadmill. Only a minority of children demonstrated a levelling-off or plateau in VO2 despite an increase in exercise intensity. These findings indicate that a VO2 plateau should not be used as a requirement for defining a maximal exercise test with prepubertal children.
Material girls: Japan's preteen model boom
AKB48 has reshaped the landscape of youth culture in modern Japan. Such a strategy encourages young people today to chase dreams of being in the spotlight that many Japanese would have shunned years ago. These days, long-term goals of careers in politics or medicine have been replaced with the need for instant gratification and glamour. Nowhere is such an ideal more apparent than in the fashion industry, and youth fashion, in particular, has undergone changes in the past five years or so that makes it virtually unrecognizable from its former state.
Kate Moss was discovered back in aged just 14, and Naomi Campbell 'recruited' at the tender age of But it looks like the fashion world is continuing to push boundaries with Dior's latest recruit for their catwalk shows barely out of childhood. Most shocking is the barely-there outfit the Isreali beauty wore was almost see-through showing off her pants and lack of bra. While it might seem like fun for the young teen to be travelling the world - could it be doing more damage than good?
